The Department of Media and Communication at LMU Munich offers a full-time, 6-month position within the research and teaching unit of Professor Neil Thurman as a Postdoc in Media Audiences / Computational Journalism.

The teaching requirement with this position is approximately 3.75 contact hours/ week during the winter semester of 2023/ 24. Should additional funding become available, the period of employment could be extended to six years.

Professor Thurman’s research and teaching unit focuses on media audience research, including the behaviour of newspapers’, magazines’, and TV channels’ online and offline audiences. It also hosts projects funded by the VolkswagenStiftung on computational journalism. These projects are researching topics including: the use of AI in local journalism; audiences’ perceptions of automated journalism; and the use of, and attitudes to, computational journalism in newsrooms. These projects involve collaboration with researchers, publishers, and technology providers in Germany and other countries. The unit is also involved in comparative journalism research through the Worlds of Journalism Study.

The candidate is expected to:

• teach 3.75 contact hours/ week during the winter semester of 2023/ 24
• Assist Professor Thurman with grant writing
• Time-allowing, get involved in the unit’s research projects

Your qualifications:

• University degree and PhD in media and communication or a related field
• Strong interest in researching media audiences and/ or computational journalism
• Fluency in English (written and oral).
• A record of publication in the English language
